Cotton fibers are measured by their length — called "staple length" in textile terminology. The standard classification, per USDA Agricultural Marketing Service:

- Medium staple: 1.0 to 1.1 inches. The majority of American upland cotton.

Peruvian Pima is grown primarily in two northern-coastal regions: Piura and Lambayeque. These are narrow desert valleys between the Pacific Ocean and the western edge of the Andes, with two climate features that conventional cotton regions don't have:

All three are ELS cotton. All three are in the luxury tier. The differences are real but subtle:
Egyptian Giza cottons (Giza 45, Giza 70, etc. — named for the crop number) are typically 1.5-1.8 inches, very silky, very strong. The Giza 45 variety is the global gold standard, used in premium Italian bed linens. Egypt has struggled with authenticity — much "Egyptian cotton" sold globally is actually blended or relabeled. The real stuff is rare and expensive.
