What polarization is, optically
Light travels as electromagnetic waves vibrating in all orientations — vertical, horizontal, diagonal, etc. Most light has these orientations randomly distributed (called 'unpolarized light'). When light reflects off a flat horizontal surface (water, road, car hood, snowfield), the orientations get re-arranged: most reflected light is now vibrating along a single axis, parallel to the reflecting surface. That's 'horizontally polarized light' — and it's the exact source of what your brain perceives as glare.
A polarized lens is built with a microscopic grating layer (originally made by aligning iodine crystals during manufacturing) that allows light to pass through if it's vibrating vertically, but blocks light vibrating horizontally. The result: horizontal-axis glare gets filtered out; vertical-axis ambient light passes through normally. You see the road, water, or snow without the bright reflected layer on top.
What this means in practice
When you look at water with non-polarized sunglasses, you see the surface reflection — a bright blue-white sheen that hides what's beneath. Polarized sunglasses cut through that reflection, letting you see fish, rocks, or a friend's foot under the waves. The same thing happens with a car windshield — non-polarized lenses let dashboard reflection bounce into your eye; polarized lenses block it.

What polarized doesn't help with
