The cubic form is achieved by adding a stabilizer (typically yttrium oxide or calcium oxide, around 8–12% by mole) and growing the crystal at very high temperatures in the lab.

The first commercial-quality lab-grown CZ was synthesized in the Soviet Union in 1976 by researchers at the Lebedev Physical Institute, who were originally looking for a high-melting-point laser substrate.
